The provincial court in Alicante has just turned down an appeal by the budget airline Ryanair in favour of boarding on foot at Alicante Airport. They have upheld an earlier decision by a Mercantile Court that the passenger air bridges must be used at the new terminal at El Altet.

Ryanair’s continuing dispute with AENA Spanish Airports embarkation regulations have caused them to announce 50% cutbacks at the airport.

Ryanair argued that embarking and disembarking on foot is a method they use wherever possible to keep operating costs down, but the provincial court considered there was “reasonable doubt of any immediate irreversible damage use of the air bridges could cause to the company.”

The court also noted  that the airline uses passengers air bridges at other Spanish airports and so embarking on foot “is not an essential factor of their operations.’

It is believed  that there can be no appeal against the court’s decision.
