New Iberia Express Budget Airline

The Spanish carrier Iberia is launching a new low cost airline next week which will operate the companys short and medium distance flights.

The new airline is expected to take up 37 of the 69 A-320 aircraft Iberia currently has in service. Iberia merged with British Airways to create the International Airline Group whose board will have to approve the decision on Thursday. The expected name for the new airline is Iberia Express.

The leasing of six planes to Vueling (a budget airline with a 45.85% Iberia shareholding) proved unsuccessful with Iberia passengers complaining about being put on Vueling flights, hence the creation of Iberia Express.

World’s oldest working car to be sold at auction

The world’s oldest working car is due to be sold at auction next month and expected to fetch £1.6 million when it goes under the hammer.

The 127-year-old antique vehicle is run on steam, using paper, coal and wood as fuel to produce the steam which powers the engine. Forward planning is required if you want to take the vintage car for ride as the vehicle takes 45 minutes to build up enough steam to motor the vehicle.

The formal name of the classic car, De Dion Buton Et Treparadoux, was shorted to the easier title of La Marquise, named after the first owner’s mother. La Marquise was built especially for the Count De Dion in 1884 and remained within the family until 1906 when it was sold to a French army officer Henri Doriol.

After 81 years with the Doriol household, the unique car was sold to motor enthusiast, Tim Moore in 1987, who succeeded in getting the car working again after it lost its copper and brass components during the First World War.

Weighing in at 150 stone, approximately the same weight as a small modern car such as the Renault Clio, and measuring just 9 feet in length, La Marquise boasts a top speed of 38mph, and is officially the oldest working car in the world. Expectations are high for the forthcoming auction, with an expected selling price in the region of £1.6 million for this one-of-a-kind car.

Himalayan Quake: India rescuers struggle in Sikkim

The magnitude 6.9 quake struck the mountainous state of Sikkim on Sunday, according to the US Geological Survey, and was followed by two strong aftershocks.

Several earthquakes hit the Himalayan region this year, but none caused major damage.

Just over the border in Tibet’s Yadong County, just 40km (25 miles) from Sikkim, the earthquake caused hundreds of landslides, disrupting traffic, telecommunications, power and water supplies.

Rescue workers in the Indian state of Sikkim are struggling to reach victims of Sunday’s powerful earthquake.

More than 90 people were killed, at least 50 of them in Sikkim.

Some 6,000 troops have been deployed in the north-eastern state to dig through mudslides and clear away rubble in an effort to reach cut-off villages.

Hundreds of people spent a second night in the open as aftershocks continued. The quake was felt elsewhere in India, as well as in Nepal, Tibet and Bhutan.
