The cheapest airlines don’t always offer the cheapest car hire rates, tourists are warned

A new survey by Travelsupermarket.com found that the best deals on car hire are not to be found through budget airlines, but by going to a car hire provider independently to find the most cost effective deals.

Many tourists fall into the trap of booking car hire at the same time as booking their flights as many misguidedly believe they’ll receive a competitive deal by purchasing more than one service through the one provider. However the research by the comparison website found that airlines are not offering the most cost effective deals on car hire, in fact, the savings can be considerable if you opt to book through an independent provider.

In the most extreme cases, the cost of car hire can be three times more expensive when booking car rental during a peak summer period through an airline as opposed to an independent car hire operator.

While one airline offered a quote for car hire of £1,055 for a two week hire of a medium sized family car in Portugal in the middle of summer, when booked independently, the research found the same deal could be bought for just £429.

Although it may be extremely convenient to book car hire at the same time as booking a flight, the savings can be massive, as much as £676, if you avoid this pitfall and make your own car hire booking for your summer holiday this year.

Redevelopment of Marbella Port

The redevelopment contract for La Bajadilla Port in Marbella has been awarded to the Qatari Sheikh who owns Malaga Football Club

The development project was officially presented on Tuesday with all the companies involved in the work being Spanish. It is estimated that it will create 1,500 direct jobs and another 3,000 indirect.

The Sheikh has awarded a €400M budget from his own funds, and it is hoped that the work will be completed within three years, with building works to start at the beginning of next year.

The new port will have mooring for 858 boats, a dry dock for another 360, plus two berths for yachts of up to125 metres in length. There will also be a dock for 175-metre cruise liners with capacity for 500 passengers.

You can also see a video of what the new Marbella port will look like.

Spanish Blue Flag beaches still number one

Spain remains in first position with 603 Blue Flags flying on their beaches and ports this summer. It is two less than in 2010, as ten beaches have lost their flags and eight new ones have been awarded to Spanish ports.

Of the 511 flags awarded to the beaches Galicia has the most with 130.Valencia is next with 116, Cataluña has 108, there are 85 in the Balearics and the region of Andalucia has 81. If you take the amount of beaches to be covered, Andalucía moves to first position with its 112.2 kms.

The international award is given for water quality, cleanliness, safety, accessibility and services. One in every six beaches in Spain will fly the blue flag this year and one in every six flags awarded across the world will fly on the Spanish coastline.
